Synopsis

Paris 1848. Frederic Chopin is playing before King Louis Phillipe who suddenly has to leave the concert. Revolution has broken out and the king, fleeing to London, takes most of the French court with him, leaving Chopin unable to make a living in Paris as a concert pianist. Taking the advice of his piano student, Jane Stirling, Chopin travels with her to London where she sets him up playing concerts in the houses of the rich and titled.

However, Chopin's haughty Polish nature soon offends London society, and he is obliged to accompany Jane to Scotland to live off her very wealthy extended family. The matter of marriage surfaces as Chopin and Jane tour Scotland, but Chopin is adamant that he will not marry Jane. Chopin finds a pretext to return to London where he quickly sinks into poverty and illness. Jane leaves Scotland to be with him, but Chopin's doctor orders his immediate return to Paris.

In Paris, Chopin rallies for a number of months without Jane's support. When he relapses again into poverty and ill health, he refuses Jane's financial assistance. Traveling from London to look after him, Chopin is ungrateful for all that Jane does for him, until on his death-bed he apologizes for his treatment of her. Jane pays for Chopin's funeral and has a statue erected over his grave. She collects all his belongings, including his compositions and piano, and dedicates herself to popularizing his work for the rest of her life.
